In this exercise, you create several basic materials in V-Ray and explore material properties and options.

Part 1:

  • Create a simple composition of 5 objects.
  • Follow V-Ray Tutorial 8.1 to create basic rendering settings for your drawing. Please also select 640x480 as your output size in the Output section of the Render Options Window. Uncheck the Show GI Only box in the Lighting Settings of the Global Switches (you will establish a directional light in step 4).
  • Follow V-Ray Tutorial 8.5 to create a V-Ray Infinite Plane below your objects
  • Create a basic directional light (Rhinoceros Tutorial 5.17) to highlight your objects.
  • Establish a saved (named) perspective view of your 5 objects, all objects must be visible.

Part 2:

  • Follow V-Ray Tutorial 8.2 to assign a basic default material to all of your objects.
  • Follow V-Ray Tutorial 8.3 to create and assign different colored materials to each of your objects. Perform a rendering of this view (showing 5 objects with 5 colors). You will post this to the course website.
  • Next, adjust the transparency of two of the objects (one should have a transparency color of “Dark Gray” and the other should have a transparency color of light gray). Perform another rendering of the same view. You will post this rendering to the website as well (in the same Exercise 11.1 post).
  • Next, Follow V-Ray Tutorial 8.4 to add reflection layers to 4 of the 5 materials. Create another rendering to post.
  • Edit the reflection layer’s Fresnel IOR for 3 of the 4 materials above. Perform another rendering and make a note of how this changes the appearance of the material. You will post this to the website as well.
  • Change the reflection glossiness on one of the above materials to 0.5 and the reflection glossiness on another to 0.75. Perform another rendering.

Part 3:

  • In this course, we will be utilizing a network rendering setup. Due to restrictions with this method of rendering, there is a central repository of materials that you can use. These materials are located on the Q: drive for every computer in the lab. You will need to locate this network resource and use it in the steps below.
  • Follow V-Ray 8.12 to import at least 5 materials to your current scene.  Assign each to one of the 5 objects.  Perform another rendering and save the result.
  • Open your .3dm file from last class (Exercise 5.4). Assign materials using the techniques learned above. Make sure to add one infinite plane below your objects. Render the result and post this, along with the others to the course website by the end of class today. You do not need to comment on this exercise.
