Creating a bump map of a texture
Introduction:
In this exercise, you will work in Adobe Photoshop to create a bump map for a texture of your choice and then use the texture on an object you create in Rhinoceros.
Part 1:
- Please find a texture image you would like to work with. The image can be from our course website (look under Resources>Collage Textures) or you can find them online (try http://www.cgtextures.com/).
- Follow Photoshop Tutorial 1.20 to create a bump map for your texture. This will be demonstrated in lecture today.
- Make sure to save both your original texture (Brick.jpg) and the bump file (Brick_bump.jpg) to your flash drive. You may wish to create a special folder for textures as you will likely re-use these in your future modeling.
Part 2:
- In Rhinoceros, create a simple object that will showcase your texture (If you have a texture that belongs on a wall, create a wall, etc.).
- Apply your texture map to each surface of your object (Follow Rhino Tutorial 5.32)
- Now apply your bump map to each surface of the object (Follow Rhino Tutorial 5.33)
- Create a simple directional light to showcase your texture (Follow Rhino Tutorial 5.17)
Part 3:
- Render your simple object in a view that showcases your new texture & bump map. Post this image to the course website as well as your original texture image and your bump map image. Note: If you used an image found online, please post a link to the website where you found it next to the original image.
