Exercise 1.2

Dropbox, Calendar and Starting GTD

Introduction:

Throughout this semester and your career as an architecture student, you will be working in computer labs. As a result, you will need to store your work on a portable device. You will need that flash drive to complete this exercise, which is due at the end of class today.

Part 1:

  • Please view and follow Digital Life Tutorial 0.3 as demonstrated in lecture.
  • You will now have a flash drive that conforms to the 3-2-1 backup principles discussed in lecture.

Part 2:

  • As we discussed in lecture, calendars are a critical part of your organizational system. While you may choose to use a different piece of software on your personal computer, your mobile calendar needs to be a web-enabled calendar or a portable version of a desktop calendar in order to be effective.
  • I recommend starting with a web-based calendar. There are many out there, but I’ve found Google Calendar to be easy, full-featured, and free. If you don’t already have a Google account, you can sign up for one (http://calendar.google.com).
  • Next, follow Digital Life Tutorial 0.11 to add our course calendar to your Google Calendar.
  • You may also wish to add your other courses to your calendar to help keep you organized.
  • If you wish to have a desktop version of your calendar, follow Digital Life Tutorial 0.10 to install Sunbird Portable on your flash drive. To sync Google Calendar to Sunbird, follow Digital Life Tutorial 0.6c.
  • When you have finished setting up your calendar. Please print the month of August, write your name on the top and hand it in to me at 1:50 this afternoon. (You can print to the laser printer in the ET 124 computer lab).

Part 3:

  • The second half of my lecture focused on the “Getting Things Done Methodology.” Take the remainder of the lab period to capture all the stuff in your “school life” (you can of course extend further into your life if you wish) and use one of the software packages discussed in lecture to capture and process this stuff (into next actions and contexts).
  • Since they are all web based, for starters I would recommend trying: (no particular order)
  • Take your time, remember to always create a “Next Action” and a “Context” in which that action can be done.
  • Please turn in a printed list of your processed next actions at the end of the lab period with your name on it.
