Exercise 3.1: Marlon’s CD Album Cover

Hey guys. Elliott Smith is one of my favorite musicians so I decided to do my album cover on him. If you haven’t listened to him before you should check him out. Anyways enjoy the album art! RIP Elliott!

Assignment 1: Marlon Cruz

For Assignment One I chose to work on a photograph I took of the Diablo Valley College Library. I chose this photograph because I loved the way the entrance to the library is designed, specifically the way the entrance is built upon layering and extruding elements that let light seep in between them. I thought this photograph captured this specific element very well and I edited the photograph to really make this show.

Here are the steps that I took to achieve this:

  • Opened photograph in Picasa then used Picnik to straighten the photograph by -0.79 degrees.
  • Opened the photograph in Photoshop.
  • Cropped the photograph to focus on specific portion of the photograph and to give it a “Rule of Thirds” feeling.
  • Opened new adjustment layer. Used “Levels” to bring out true black and true white. [Black (13), White (242), Gray (0.87)]
  • Opened new adjustment layer. Used “Black and White” and changed it from the “Default” setting to “Darker”.
  • Opened new adjustment layer. Used “Burn” to darken certain areas on the photograph. [Overlay, Fill with Overlay-Neutral Color (50% gray)]

Marlon Cruz’s Exercise 2.3

Here’s the photo that I edited for Exercise 2.3. It is a photograph I took while eating chicken fried steak at Denny’s.  Tell me what you think! (Note: Comment about the edited photos not the chicken fried steak at Denny’s)

Marlon’s Blog Suggestion: The Best Part

Hey everyone its Marlon here and if there is anything I love besides architecture it has to be graphic design. For maybe the past year and a half now I have been checking out this blog on a daily basis and it comments on everything from graphic design and illustrations to even cars, furniture, and interior architecture. The website is called THE BEST PART – A Daily Art and Design Blog. Some its useful aspects are: it posts new material almost daily (usually more than one a day), each post always has a link to the original artist’s website, the commentary for each post is short and leaves the art to speak for itself, they have a huge archive that I believe goes back almost three years (so in other words they have a ton of stuff to look at), and lastly the blog has links to inspirational design videos, to an online store, and links to other great art/design blogs. I highly recommend The Best Part and that you check it out as soon as you can especially if you love art and design.
