Digital Life 0.5 [calendar feeds]

“Subscribing to a Calendar Feed”

There are certainly many options for calendars, some being desktop (iCal, Outlook, etc.) and others living in the cloud (Google Calendar, etc.) I will highlight some of the major players here, but all should be similar to set up.

Outlook:

  1. Choose Tools>Account Settings and click on the “Internet Calendars” tab and paste the ical format feed from the course website. (http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/4dg0407pppv3abc03cop2ajjo4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics)
  2. Click on the “Add” button. Now, each time you check for mail in Outlook, it will automatically sync your calendar as well. Recognize this is one way synchronization from the calendar feed. Anything you add will not go back to the course calendar.

Sunbird (Free from Mozilla):

  1. A great option if you don’t have Outlook or don’t want to purchase it. Download Sunbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/) and install it by following the on screen directions.  A portable version of Sunbird is available here: http://portableapps.com/apps/office/sunbird_portable
  2. Now open Sunbird and navigate to File>Subscribe to Remote Calendar
  3. In the dialog box that pops up, select “On the Network” and click Next.
  4. Now select the “iCalendar” radio button and paste the iCal format feed (url) into the Location box and click next.  (http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/4dg0407pppv3abc03cop2ajjo4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics)
  5. You can now give the feed a name (other than basic). Click “Next” and “Finish” and you will now see all of our calendar events.

For iCal (Mac):

  1. Open iCal and navigate to Calendar>Subscribe
  2. Paste the ical format feed (url) (http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/4dg0407pppv3abc03cop2ajjo4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics) into the “Calendar URL” field and select “Subscribe”
  3. You will now see a dialog box that gives you options for the calendar. You may change these options if you like and press the “Ok” button. You will now see the course calendar in iCal.

For Google Calendar:

  1. Log in to your Google Calendar account and click the “Add” link under the “Other Calendars” Section of the webpage. Select the “Add by URL” option.
  2. Paste the iCal format feed (url) (http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/4dg0407pppv3abc03cop2ajjo4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics) into the “Public Calendar Address Field” and select the “Add” button. You have now subscribed to our course calendar.
