“Creating a transparency map for a Rhinoceros texture”

  1. Begin by opening the image file of the Rhinoceros texture in Adobe Photoshop CS3.
  2. Create a new layer by clicking on the New Layer button at the bottom of the layer window.
  3. On the new layer, you will need to create black areas were you would like transparency and white areas were you would like opacity. Gray tones will produce intermediate transparency results.
  4. Using any tool, create these black and white areas. You may elect to use the marquee tool, the magic wand tool, the color select tool, the paint bucket tool, the various shapes tools, or any other appropriate tool to create these black and white regions.
  5. Once complete, turn off the layer containing your Rhinoceros Texture.
  6. Use the Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur filter with a 1.0 pixel radius to slightly blur your black and white bump map. This will result in better mapping.
  7. Use File>Save As… and add “_transparency” to the file name. Please save your texture and your transparency map in a “textures” folder on your flash drive. You will need these files later.
