Rhinoceros 5.34 [transparency maps]

“Working with transparency maps”

  1. Follow Rhino Tutorial 5.16 to bring up the material properties page.
  2. To add a custom transparency map (transparency in parts of the texture but not others) to a particular surface in your model, click on the “+” sign next to “Transparency.”
  3. Within these transparency map settings, you can select a particular image as the map file by clicking on the “…” button. This image file should be grayscale (or black and white) with the black portions representing the transparent regions and the white representing solid regions). For help creating a transparency map, see Photoshop Tutorial 1.21.
  4. You can adjust the intensity of the map using the intensity text box. This controls how transparent black regions of the transparency map will be in the final rendering.
  5. Filtering can help eliminated pixilation in the rendering so generally it should be left checked. If you are tiling a small image on a larger surface, you may want to turn this off so the rendering doesn’t appear blurry.
  6. By clicking on the “Modify” button next to Tiling, you can specify the number of U and V spans that should be done with your particular transparency map. Your transparency map is 1U and 1V in size so increasing these numbers will increase the number of times your transparency map is used to tile over the surface. Your tiling values will generally match the values specified in the texture tiling.
