First (after cropping the excess blurry bark chunks) I edited the levels slightly so that the highlights would come through better, then adjusted the curves so that it became a little darker. After making the colors "pop", I continued to use Photoshop to lower the brightness and up the contrast (since I like the shadows of this picture). After experimenting with those options in Photoshop, I then did multiple selective color layers. I finally decided to keep my "red" layer, which made the bark more red (obviously) but also increased the blue's value.
