Assignment #1 – Lihjen Sun

This photo was taken in an early morning when the town was still in sleep. It was a cloudy/raining day. I strolled around the empty street and spotted this old market entrance nested in old buildings. It was a day before Chinese New year. Contrasting against the other side of the city decorated with "red" color and lights to celebrate the New year, this scene projected an old, vanished history of the town. I wanted to further enhanced the "aged" mood of this photo, so I applied the following adjustments.

  1. Used Curves - apply standard "S" curve adjustment
  2. Increased Vibrance and Saturation - however, did not see much difference
  3. Applied grunge effect with a grayish paper texture background
  4. Tried Multiply/Screen/Overlay effect and decided to use "Overlay"
  5. Added another layer for Dodge & Burn. I darkened some areas of the buildings behind the bicycle man, and lightened the bicycle man (especially for the red bucket on the bike), the man sitting on the floor, and trees/plants on and beside the building. The "Dodged" area was to highlight the "live" objects against the "old, dead" surroundings.

  1. This is such a cool image! The grunge texture really helps to enhance the tone and story of an aged town on a gloomy day by hiding the bright sky. It looks slightly distressed and inspires me to believe maybe it was found in an old photo album. It was also a great idea to make the “living” objects pop as a contrasting element.

  2. You can see where lightened and darkened some spots out but I think it helped out in example for the red sign on the right, or the man sitting down. I feel like sign doesn’t look as old, and the old man pops more. I like the grunge affect that you added, it looks like its only on the bottom where the street is

  5. This photo is so well done. The post-processing that you apply is subtle and really tells an amazing story about life and culture. There’s not much more I can say. You did a great job and are a great photographer. 🙂
