Assignment 101 – Jackson Pipkins

I took this photo of a vaguely heart shaped seed pod that my neighbor's tree grows this time of year. This photo was also take the week during massive amounts of smoke in California so I wanted to highlight that feeling. I began by using a color balance adjustment layer to make the colors pop more and used the multiply mode. I followed that up with a levels adjustment layer also using the multiply mode which gave it a more moody feeling and made they brown turn a deep red/maroon. I then used a curves adjustment layer with the lighten mode, this didn't make a large difference but brought the image brightness up generally without blowing out the upper right part of the seed pod. Using the dodge and burn tools I highlighted the texture in the leaf to make the "veins" more prominent as well as to make the seam in the middle appear more extreme than it normally is. Finally I used the blur tool to make the other pods look more like background elements and to allow the main pod to really pop.

  1. Hello Jackson,

I think you did an excellent job making the edited image look more “true-to-life” than the original by darkening it and consequently really bringing out the orange-ish hues we saw a lot of that week. I particularly enjoy the incredible accentuation of the featured leaf’s vascularity and the narrow field of view for this macro shot. I, too had to darken my chosen image a lot in order to more accurately reflect what I saw in the real world by adjusting the levels and curves, so I suspect that’ll be a major part of both of our work flows!

  2. Hi Jackson,
I really like what you did especially highlighting some parts of the leaf and how it worked! Also adding shadow on the back (green) leaves helped to define the weather. Good job!

  8. Oh wow! I like the color scheme you used on this photo! It really makes the leaf pop and the detail on the focusing of the leaf is great.

  9. Hello Jackson. The edits you made to the veins of the leaf really makes the image pop out at the viewer. Same goes for your editing of the color scheme using the multiply mode. The darkening of the photo really allows the deep red of the leaf the stand out that much more. My only critique is I would have maybe darkened the bottom of the leaf to a lesser degree as it somewhat blends into the dark leaves behind it.
