You will design and build (3D model) a 500 square foot artist’s retreat. The retreat can be in one of two locations. One possible location is in the mountains accessible by foot (2-hour hike) and the other is on the ocean and is also accessible by foot (1-hour hike). Topography and locations files are available on the course website. Your retreat can be in any architectural style you choose, though it should respond to the site conditions (sun, wind, views, etc.) Your design should include both interior and exterior spaces and must reflect the nature of the artist (you can pick one) for whom you are designing. You may locate your retreat on any portion of the site given. The program of the retreat is rather loose, but you should consider having a sleeping space, cooking space, bathroom, meditation space & artist’s studio.
- Begin by selecting your site. Spend time doing research on-site conditions then select the artist of your choice as a client. Focus on your design. This is a quick design charrette, but I expect thorough design development and informed design decisions. Stay away from modeling a traditional space and focus on bending/breaking conventions.

- Using the techniques discussed in class, build a 3D computer model of your design.
- You should build your structure in its own Rhino file and add it to the topography file as a block reference. The topography/site file is your master file where lighting/sun/environments are installed. Remember the project tool and the split tool.
- You should model interior details as well as exterior details. Be sure to use layers to separate objects by material and location (Don’t forget about block objects).
- Using the techniques we discussed in previous exercises, make at minimum 1 exterior (daylight) perspective rendering, 1 interior (daylight) rendering, 1 exterior night rendering, and 1 interior night rendering. You can make more renderings if you wish.
- Using the techniques we discussed in previous exercises, make at minimum 1 line-drawing/clay-rendering plan and 1 line-drawing/clay-rendering section or elevation. You will need to fine-tune lineweights in Adobe Illustrator. Specific instructions on this technique will be given in the lecture. See Assembly 10.7 [Plans from Rhino], Assembly 10.8 [Elevations from Rhino], and/or Assembly 10.9 [Sections from Rhino] for additional support.
- Post your renderings and your line drawings (4 renders, 1 plan OR 1 section/elevation) in one post on the course website by midnight on Monday, 5/17. This is a "hard deadline." I will not accept any late work!
- You are welcome to include more renderings/drawings if you wish, but make sure you satisfy the assignment requirements.
- Your grade will be based on your renderings (V-Ray & Photoshop), your 3D modeling (Rhinoceros) detail, and your plan and section or elevation.
