Exercise 0.1 – Angela Kang – Architectural Digest

Architectural Digest
"Two Lucky Brand Executives' Stylish L.A. Home"

This article is about a new home of a partner in life and in business Dave DeMattei and Patrick Wade.
Both men have extensive experience in fashion and home furnishing. Utilizing their skills and experiences, they've renovated a five-bedroom, 5,000-square-foot Italianate residence built in 1920's in Beverly Hills. This article covers what this couple had put into their new home and what they had to give up, like the home in San Francisco, which they owned together for over 20 years and a vineyard with a cottage in Napa Valley. After giving up certain part of their lives and adding it into their new home, this home is what they called it a "summary statement of who they are, where they've been and what they love." (Demattei)
This article was especially interesting to me because it combined two of my favorite things, fashion and architecture. I would love to be able to do what these men did here and this article is an inspiration for me to follow in the future. They also combined traditional building with modern touch, which is what I love doing in my designs, combining the old with the new and east with west. Overall, what these men did is an inspiration for me and this is why I decided to read and post this article over any other.

  1. “Architectural Digest” is an interesting magazine in that it dedicates a lot of its focus on the interior design and fashionable additions to elaborate homes. I was not surprised to find that they chose to highlight a home in West Hollywood. One would be safe to assume that you could find trendy and classical touches on homes in that area and this article does not fail in maintaining that allure. Great piece.

  2. Undeniable warm and cozy atmosphere. It’s somehow against today mostly minimal architecture, and it’s amazing.

  3. The fact that the men are both designers probably made the whole experience a lot smoother since they had extensive experience. The article is a great motivational story towards achieving your goals and compromise.
