Exercise 101 – Connor Achziger

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre

Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Completed in 2016, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Athens, Greece plays an important role In preserving Greek culture and promoting local education. The structure houses the National Library as well as a large opera house, auditorium halls, and over 170,000 square meters of outdoor park space. Architect Renzo Piano always designs with sustainability in mind. The complex is able to produce its own energy and the open plan for many spaces promotes natural ventilation. The careful consideration of environmental systems into the buildings overall design has been rewarded with a Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification.

Below is a link to the project from the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) website.

  1. The striking amount of vertical and horizontal lines bring about an intense geometrical design. However, there is the juxtaposition of the round chairs on the first floor. I love the inclusion of the transparent walls as they bring in a lot of natural light.

  2. This building design reminds me of the newest building at UBC (University of British Columbia) — AMS Student Nest in Vancouver, BC. They have a very similar idea of interior design, and one thing I really like about this design is the triple or even quadruple volume space. It feels very spacious and is definitely an excellent open space for users to chill out here.
