Roman Pantheon

The Pantheon was built in AD 113 and was the largest spanning dome until 1949.

Here is an interesting link to the Pantheon from Arch Daily:

  1. Dear Professor Adams,

I particularly enjoy ancient architecture because it amazes me that these hulking structures were constructed unaided by all of the modern tools and techniques we take for granted today.

As an interesting note, I was entirely unaware that fires claimed the first two Pantheons.

Additionally, the article you posted mentioned the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore construed in 1436 having a larger dome. Was the cathedral’s dome considered to be of the “supported” variety? What differentiates it from the Pantheon as a practical matter of design and construction in that regard?

    – Joe
