EXERCISE 101 – Wilhelm Lehmann

Cathedral of Brasília

Architect Oscar Niemeyer and structure engineer Joaquim Cardozo completed this building on May 31, 1970. The building officially known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Aparecida, is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Our Lady of Aparecida.

  1. This building has a very interesting design, and I think the church is especially remarkable from the inside. The shape allows for light to enter from 360 degrees through stained glass into the main area, bathing the congregation in colored light.

  2. I would have never assumed this building was a church. It’s got a really fascinating design, one that I’ve never seen related with religious structures but I really like the concept of it.

  3. I think it is a super cool design and it looks like it is partially underground. I wasn’t expecting the inside to be as large as it is. The stain glass is remarkable and adds so much color and light to the church, as if you are almost under water.

  4. This is a very interesting design for a church. The way that the pillars curve allow viewers to cover every part of the church as their eyes naturally move up to the cross.
