Introduction:

In this exercise, you will work to establish an interior night perspective/rendering. You should consider adding both interior and exterior lighting to the scene and control the output of the lighting. You will also install and use a night sky HDRI background.

Part 1: Setting up your view in Rhinoceros

  • Follow Rhinoceros 5.28 [named views] to set up a third named view of your interior. You may wish to change the lens length down to 18(mm) to mimic a wide-angle lens camera. This can be the same view you established for your exterior rendering or you can pick a new view.
  • Make sure your scene has appropriate materials assigned. If necessary, adjust texture maps to make materials have an appropriate scale.
    • Note: You should perform a File>Save As... before continuing with this exercise. You should also switch your glass material from being the highly reflective material used for your day exterior rendering and instead use a more conventional glass material. (V-Ray 8.14 or download “Basic Glass” from the course website)

Part 2: Night HDRI

Part 3: Adding Lights.

  • Identify 2-4 exterior places where you would like to add lights to your rendering. You may need to create geometry to hold the light. You can make this geometry as a block reference (Rhino 5.14 [blocks]) so you can use it later. (You may have done this in Exercise 219 & 221, but review light locations and modify if necessary).
    • Note: Before changing V-Ray settings, save your .visopt file so that you can return to your daytime settings and do additional renderings.
  • If you can see the light source (i.e. a bulb, neon, etc.) then you should create and use an emissive material (V-Ray 8.15 [emissive material]) to represent the bulb.
    • Note: Turn the intensity up to 100 so that you can see the bulb in your rendering.
  • Place your light geometry in the scene.
  • Using settings similar to those used in Exercise 219 & 221, create spotlights or point lights as appropriate for each fixture in the interior/exterior night rendering.

Part 4: Save Your Rendering(s) and Elements/Channels

  • Follow V-Ray 8.25 [channels] to turn on the “Reflection” and “Refraction” channels in addition to the Z-Depth, Alpha & Background.
  • Perform a final rendering. Ideally, the final rendering would be 800px or larger (for the long side) though this will depend on the time remaining in the lab.

Part 5: Finesse & Final Image

  • Post your work to the course website by the end of class today. You should comment on 3 other students’ renderings for this exercise. Next week you will continue working with V-Ray for your final project.
