More 2D Drawing & Introduction to 3D

As you continue to work in Rhino, you will need to be able to draw in two dimensions as well as three dimensions. The following exercise will extend your knowledge of basic 2D drawing and introduce you to the third dimension. Spend time learning what certain commands do so that you will be able to effectively use them throughout the semester.

Part 1: Drawing Elevations

  • Begin by drawing the south elevation of the building you drew on Monday. I do not expect this to be a complete elevation, but add as much detail as you can.
    • Note: If you finish early, please continue to draw elevations for the other sides of the building as well.

Part 2: Layers

  • Please assign the floor plan to “Layer 01.” You may wish to rename Layer 01 by double-clicking on it.
  • Please assign the south elevation to “Layer 02.” Again, you may wish to change the layer name by double-clicking on it.

Part 3: Rotate 3D

  • Use the rotate3d command (Transform>Rotate3d) to rotate the elevation vertical (Follow Rhinoceros 5.6 [rotate3d])
  • When you are finished, turn off the layer with your elevation(s) on it. (You can do this by clicking on the light bulb next to the layer name.)

Part 4: Extrude

  • First, make sure the lines representing your interior and exterior walls have been joined (use the join command). You do not need to worry about window openings as we will create them later.
  • Switch from the top view to the perspective view by double-clicking on “top” and then double-clicking on “perspective.”
  • With a closed polyline, navigate to Surface>Extrude Curve>Straight or type extrudecrv into the command line. The command line will prompt you to select a curve, please select one of your closed wall curves.
  • Make sure “Cap” is set to yes and move your mouse in the positive z-direction (up) and type the height of your wall (typically 8’) and hit enter/return. You have just created a surface.203

Part 5: Project

  • Turn back on the layer containing your elevation. Select this elevation and change your view to be the front view (double click on “Front”) or whatever view shows your elevation.
  • With the elevation selected, navigate to Curve>Curve From Object>Project or type project into the command line. Next, select the surface of the wall(s) you created in step 4 and hit enter/return. Rhino will project your elevation drawing on the surface of the walls.

Part 4: Finish Drawing & Post

  • Please work for the remainder of the class period adding additional elevations for the other sides of the building. At the end of the lab period, use Capture to File to create an image file of your drawing (this should be a .jpg or .png file) and post the image to the course website.
