Using HDRI images for background lighting & imagery

Introduction:

In this exercise, you will learn to use HDRI images for background lighting & imagery.

Part 1:  Establishing an HDRI environment

  • Open your work from Exercise 215  [this should be the SF City Model file]
  • Follow V-Ray 8.24 [HDRI] to set up an HDRI image environment for the GI (Skylight) and Background.
    • Note:  You will want to turn off unnecessary layers for this step.
  • Please visit the V-Ray Quick Rendering Setups Page to download HDRI background images (or click links to where you can download HDRI images)
    • Note:  This page also contains valuable information about sun and lighting settings that relate to these HDRI images.  For this exercise, however, you should follow the steps below to manually set up the sun & settings so that you learn the process and could do it for a different HDRI that you found or created yourself.

Part 2: Assigning a V-Ray Sun System

Part 3: Assigning Appropriate Materials

  • Spend some time assigning materials to your model.  Make sure to adjust the mapping on objects to have the material applied correctly.  You may use materials you find online (either the digital tools site or outside sources) or you can create your own.

Part 4:  Final Rendering(s)

  • Follow V-Ray 8.25 [channels] to create RGB Color, Alpha, Background & Z-Depth channels.
  • Perform your final rendering at 800 x 600 minimum.  You may elect to render at a larger size, but be aware this can take more time.  You should now be using the distributed rendering option.
  • Make sure to save .jpg or .png files for each channel you create (RGB Color, Alpha, Background, & Z-depth).  You will need/use these files later.
  • Post your final RGB color image to the course website by the end of class today.  Please comment on at least 3 other students’ renderings before the start of next class.
