Exercise 122

Elevations in AutoCAD

Today we will continue our introduction to AutoCAD. You will work with the same file as Exercise 121, but will use layers to organize your work. We will also explore construction rays and non-printing layers.

Part I: 

  • Open the model you worked with in Exercise 121.
  • Click on the Layer Properties button or type layer.
  • In the layer properties manager (that pops up), click on the new layer button. A new layer will be created. Rename this layer to be “South Elevation” Please also make another layer called guides. Change the color of this layer to be red and the “Plot” to be non-plotting. Make the guides layer active.

Part II: South Elevation

  • Draw a bounding box (rectangle that contains all of your floor plan) around your work. (This will be demonstrated in lecture).
  • Use the ray command (type ray) to create long guidelines extending from the major corners of the building and from each edge of the window(s).
  • Switch your current layer to be “South Elevation.” Using the rays as guidelines for your work, draw in the south elevation. Use the tools you are familiar with from the previous class (Exercise 120/121).
  • Adjust line weights as appropriate (see back of handout for a guide).
    • Note: You can create and use additional layers should you want to do so. You can change an object’s layer by selecting the object and then changing the layer shown in the layer section of the Home ribbon.

Part III: East, West, North Elevations

  • Repeat the process for each of the remaining elevations. You should be able to “fold” out each elevation view from your plan.
    • Note: You will want to create a 45 degree line extending from each corner of the bounding box and use this line as a reflection line to keep heights consistent in the drawing process. (This will be demonstrated in lecture).

Part IV: Roof Plan

  • Draw an appropriate roof plan (if you have time) showing your roof ridges, hips, valleys, etc. This should be on a new layer and will likely help you when drawing your elevations.

Part V: Submitting your work

  • At the end of class, use Plot (Publish to Web .jpg) to create an image of your plan with folded out elevations. Post this image to the course website by the end of class today.
